"I had the words. They never came out." We go back to that scene and redo it in 25 minutes.

Descrizioni

[This lesson starts from the scenes of daily life]
Public offices, hospitals, work, shopping, school, neighbours.
Choose, from these six,
the one scene you find hardest today.
We practise three expressions used in that scene,
then do a role play.
Not only how to say it, but why it is said that way.
One scene per lesson, in a form you can take home in 25 minutes.

[Choose one of the six scenes]
1. Public offices
City hall counters, hospitals and pharmacies, banks and post offices,
asking your way at a station or on public transport
2. Work
Greetings, reporting and consulting, speaking up in meetings,
phone calls, asking a colleague, keigo with your boss
3. Shopping
Fitting rooms, sizes and stock, returns and exchanges,
online order enquiries, ordering food and explaining allergies
4. Neighbourhood
Neighbours, the residents' association and circular notices, rubbish rules,
greeting the neighbours when you move in, local events
5. School
Parents' meetings and PTA, one-to-one talks with teachers, enrolment,
reading the contact book and school notices
6. Dining and hosting
Wedding receptions, business dinners, guiding guests,
   seeing them off

[This lesson is for you if]
- You could not make yourself understood at a city office, hospital or bank
- You are not confident with keigo, or with reporting and consulting at work
- You want wording that is polite enough for school and PTA messages
- You are unsure how close to get with neighbours or the residents' association
- You cannot quite say what you mean to shop staff, or when eating out
- Keigo does not come out at business dinners or wedding receptions
- You are staying a short while, and know exactly which scenes you need

[After the scene, one "why?"]
Once we have practised the expressions,
we look at just one "why?" that belongs to that scene.
Not about right or wrong grammar -
it is about how the person chooses those words.
- Public offices
why "sumimasen" is an apology and also a way of calling someone
- Work
why "kento shimasu" leaves things unclear
- Shopping
why "kekko desu" can mean yes and also no
- Neighbourhood
the idea of mutual help behind "otagaisama" and "okagesama de"
- School
why "osewa ni natte orimasu" became a set phrase
- Dining and hosting
what "itadakimasu" and "enryo naku" say about distance from the other person
In every scene, we can also look at
why aizuchi is not something that interrupts a conversation
but something that builds it together with the other person.
In the last minute or two,
I touch on where that way of thinking comes from.
This is the part I most want you to take home today.

[How the 25 minutes runs]
0:00-0:02  Greeting / choose today's scene
0:02-0:06  Three expressions, and how to choose between them
0:06-0:17  Role play
(I do not stop you in the middle when you make a mistake)
0:17-0:21  Why Japanese people say it, and do it, that way
0:21-0:24  Review / compare other wording / agree the next scene
0:24-0:25  Wrap-up and what to do next time

[What you take away]
- Three expressions you can use from today in that scene
- One "why" point
(next time in the same scene, the other person's reaction changes)
- A sense of how your words actually reach the other person

[Who this is for]
Beginner to intermediate.
You can read hiragana and katakana; high school age or older.
Mainly for people living or working in Japan,
and welcome to those about to start work, or staying a short while.

[Materials]
I prepare everything.
I share one or two slides of example conversation for the scene.
Nothing for you to prepare. Nothing to print.
Repeating the same scene with a different person
(someone at work, a neighbour, a friend) widens your range.

[Camera]
Camera on or off, whichever you prefer.
Audio only is fine too.

[How this differs from my other lessons]
Anime, music, anything you like -
if that is what you want to talk about:
"Japanese free talk with 'why?'".
If the conversation will not keep going,
or you hesitate over aizuchi and keigo:
"Conversation problems, solved with 'why?'".
Both of those work on what happens inside a conversation.
"Living Japanese, understood through 'why?'"
instead takes the six scenes of city offices, hospitals,
work, shopping, school and neighbours,
and practises one of them, one scene per lesson.

[Finally]
It is all right to make mistakes.
We start by practising getting your meaning across.
On top of that,
we also work properly on speaking correctly and naturally.
More than perfect Japanese,
I value your willingness to understand Japanese people and culture.
That, I believe, is the shortest path
to learning Japanese.
