This lesson plan is intended for intermediate learners, makes use of the Audio-Lingual and the Direct Methods, and is in the Present, Practice, Produce format.
Stage Aim 1:
The teacher greets the student and vice versa.
Stage Aim 2:
The teacher introduces the topic of the lesson: there is and there are. The teacher checks to see what the student already knows about these constructions.
Stage Aim 2:
The teacher explains the rules for subject-verb agreement, the purpose of using the construction there is and there are, and the use of there is and there are with just one noun or with a series of nouns. 1) Subject-Verb Agreement:
Plural nouns take plural verbs: Mary and John are tired.
Singular nouns take singular verbs: Dorothy is in the kitchen.
2) There is and there are with only one noun:
If the noun is singular, use there is: There is a pen on his desk.
If the noun is plural, use there are: There are many birds in the sky.
3) There is and there are with a series of nouns:
If the first word is singular, use there is: There is a book, a stapler, and a pencill sharpener on her desk. (Note the controversy surrounding this
construction.)
If the first word is plural, use there are: There are fruits and a pitcher of water on the kitchen counter.

Stage Aim 3:
The teacher conducts a series of drills to test the student’s comprehension of the grammatical concepts covered in today’s class. The teacher corrects the student when necessary.
Stage Aim 4:
The teacher and the student perform a role play. The student will play the role of a stock clerk in a store and the teacher will play the role of the store manager. The teacher will give the student a list of items that the store sells. The teacher as the store manager will ask if a specific product is in stock. The student as the stock clerk will then use the construction there is and there are to tell the manager if there are any of those specifc items in stokck.
Stage Aim 5:
The student will perform a fluency exercise describing everything that is in his or her house or apartment using there is and/or there are. The teacher will inform the student of any mistakes he or she made during the fluency exercise at the end of the exercise.
Stage Aim 6:
The teacher asks the student concept check questions to verify the student’s understanding of the material presented in today’s lesson. The teacher explains the homework and verifies the student’s understanding of the instructions for homework by asking the students concept questions about the homework.
