South Africa's Most Popular Natural Wonders

From its 2,700 kilometres of coastline to its mountain ranges and wide open plains, South Africa’s landscape is one of the most diverse in the world. Here are some of the country's most popular natural attractions.

Table Mountain
If you prefer to stay close to civilization, a visit to Table Mountain might be a good choice. The flat-topped mountain is close to Cape Town. Visitors can get there by a cableway, which has operated since 1926. Activities include rock climbing, exploring caves, and mountain biking.

The Garden Route
The Garden Route is a 300-kilometer road that travels through 10 nature reserves between the ocean and the mountains. If you visit between July and December, you might be lucky enough to see an endangered southern right whale, who travel to the area to give birth in the spring.

Robben Island
Robben Island is home to a colony of African penguins, who can easily be seen up close in their natural habitat. It’s also where President Nelson Mandela was held as a political prisoner. In fact, three former inmates of Robben Island have gone on to become the president of South Africa.

Kruger National Park
The Kruger National Park in north eastern South Africa is home to 147 different species – more than any other African reserve. Some highlights include lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and hippos. Visitors wanting a break from the park’s animal-focused activities can enjoy dinner and traditional dance performances at the nearby Shangaan River Club.
