PHONEMES are the smallest sounds in the English language. In English we have 44 PHONEMES.
Many English phonemes especially consonants don't exist in other languages. Some tricky phonemes for Japanese and Korean learners are:
- /l/ /r/
- th /θ/ /ð/
- /ə/ (the unstressed vowel)
- /f/ /v/
- all vowels i ɪ e æ ɜ ʌ ɑ u ʊ ɔ ɒ
- /w/
- adding an extra /ə/ to final consonant sounds
- Consonant clusters (two consonant that blend) e.g. /tr/ /bl/
- /g/ and /k/
