What was Prince Edward Island really like when author L.M. Montgomery was growing up?
 

And how much of the world we know from the Anne of Green Gables novels and TV adaptations reflects the real island of the 1890s and early 1900s?
 

In this seminar, we'll look at three different perspectives:
 

Montgomery's original books
Modern television adaptations
The historical reality of Prince Edward Island
 

We'll explore some fascinating questions along the way:
 

• What did Montgomery include—and leave out—when creating Anne's world?
 

• What do we learn when modern adaptations introduce aspects of Mi'kmaq, Black, and Jewish history that are largely absent from the original novels?
 

• How did expectations for women, education, independence, and relationships differ from the world portrayed in modern adaptations?
 

• Why has Gilbert's story been expanded in later adaptations?
 

• And what was silver fox farming—and why was it once such an important industry on Prince Edward Island?
 

Rather than simply asking whether a modern TV adaptation is “accurate,” we'll consider a bigger question:
 

When historical fiction changes the past, what should it preserve—and what can it change?

The seminar will be conducted entirely in English and is designed for B2-level English speakers and above. It will be an opportunity to practice listening and critical thinking skills while exploring Canadian literature, history, and one of Canada's best-known literary characters.
