Hello, I’m John!

Hello! I’m John, a native American English teacher originally from Alaska, USA, and now living and teaching in Japan. I’ve been teaching English for more than six years and have had the pleasure of working with students from many different countries and backgrounds.

I’ve always been interested in languages and different cultures. That interest led me to earn a BA in Language Arts (Japanese) with a minor in Linguistics. After university, I moved to Japan, where I’ve been living and teaching ever since.

One of my favorite things about teaching is getting to know my students. Everyone has a different reason for learning English, and I enjoy finding ways to make lessons useful, interesting, and enjoyable for each person.

Whether you want to have more natural conversations, improve your pronunciation, prepare for IELTS, communicate more confidently at work, or simply feel more comfortable using English, I'd be happy to help.

What Are My Lessons Like?

I believe learning English should be practical, relaxed, and enjoyable.

You don't need to worry about making mistakes in my lessons. Mistakes are a natural part of learning! My goal is to create a friendly and comfortable environment where you can speak, ask questions, try new expressions, and gradually build your confidence.

My lessons are personalized to your level, interests, and goals. Depending on what you'd like to work on, we can focus on:

  • Everyday and casual English conversation

  • Natural American English and pronunciation

  • Business English and workplace communication

  • Travel English

  • IELTS Speaking and Writing

  • Fluency, vocabulary, and natural expressions

  • English for your personal or professional goals

I especially enjoy helping students understand the difference between English that is grammatically correct and English that sounds natural in everyday conversation.

And if there's something specific you'd like to learn, just let me know. I'm happy to adapt lessons to your interests and needs.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Native American English speaker

  • BA in Language Arts (Japanese)

  • Minor in Linguistics

  • Over 6 years of teaching experience

  • Experience teaching students from many different countries

  • Specialized experience with IELTS Speaking & Writing

  • Business English and workplace communication

  • Experience helping students improve pronunciation, fluency, and natural communication

My background in Japanese and Linguistics has also given me a deeper understanding of what it is like to learn another language and the challenges that can come with it.

A Little About Me

Outside of teaching, I enjoy photography, cycling, exploring Japan, and discovering interesting places and everyday life around me.

I also enjoy talking about travel, culture, history, and all kinds of everyday topics. In fact, some of my favorite lessons are simply good conversations where we can laugh, exchange ideas, and learn something from each other.

I think some of the best English practice happens when you're having a conversation about something you genuinely enjoy.

Why I Love Teaching

Teaching is about much more than grammar and vocabulary for me.

I love meeting people from different places, hearing their stories, learning about their cultures, and helping them become more confident English speakers.
