Nice to meet you! I’m May, a Japanese language tutor.
I currently teach Japanese at a university in Japan and am also involved in research on Japanese language education.
*Please note that I am currently not accepting new students.
On Cafetalk, my goal is to help students “use correct and natural Japanese,” so I offer a variety of Japanese lessons. I tailor the lesson pace and content to each student’s level, correct any mistakes, and explain “what, how, and why” the corrections were made.
I also send feedback after each lesson so you can review what you learned.

◆ Lesson Information
*Please read the description for each lesson carefully before booking them.
① Speaking Lessons: Practice Casual Conversation
These lessons are designed for those who have studied basic Japanese but do not have the opportunity to speak it, or who are unsure where they are making mistakes. The tutor will provide support when you don’t understand a word or expression.
★“日本語で話そう!/ Free Conversation” (25min/50min) … Beginner level and above
This is a free-talking style lesson. We will chat freely without a specific topic. (Topics often revolve around your recent daily life.) Rather than the tutor speaking one-sidedly or just chatting, I do my best to tailor the conversation to the student’s interests so that the student can speak as much as possible during the lesson.
Recommended for:
・Those who want to practice answering a variety of unpredictable questions
・Those who want to experience natural, casual conversation without preparation
★ “テーマに合わせて正しく話そう!/ Let’s discuss interesting topics with me!” (25min/50min) … Beginner level and above
… Before the lesson, you will choose a topic, and the tutor will send you a list of questions related to it. During the lesson, you can pick any questions you like from the list and answer them. You’re also welcome to choose your own topic.
Recommended for:
・Those who want to talk about a variety of topics
・Those who want to expand their vocabulary and expressions
・Those who want their sentences checked in detail
・Those who get nervous if they don’t know what they’ll be talking about in advance
★ “スピーチ練習 / Speech Practice” (25min/50min) … Upper-beginner level and above
… You’ll choose a topic and prepare a short speech, and I’ll review the content, expressions, and grammar.
Recommended for:
・Those who want to practice delivering a coherent speech … I’ll review the content, structure, and sentence flow.
・Those who want to discuss slightly abstract topics … You can talk about things that don’t often come up in free conversation, such as dreams or life in general.
② Speaking Practice: Role-Play Exercises
★ “Survival Japanese Conversation”… Beginner level
Learn basic conversational skills for travel, such as useful phrases for restaurants and shops.
★ “日常会話を学ぼう!/ Let’s Learn Everyday Conversation!“… Upper-beginner level and above
This is the next step after “Survival Japanese Conversation.”
You will practice describing situations in greater detail, simulating conversations with store clerks or with acquaintances.
★ “ビジネス会話 / Business Conversation”… Advanced level
You will practice conversations based on various business situations, such as making requests or consulting with others. You can also practice using your own real-life business situations. This course is intended for those who have already studied honorific language.
③ Reading Lessons
★ “本を読もう!/ Let’s Read a Book!” (25min/50min) ...Intermediate level and above
You’ll read your favorite books aloud to check the pronunciation of kanji and the meanings of words and expressions, while discussing the content.
★ “発音・アクセントの練習 / Pronunciation and Stress Practice” ...Upper-beginner level and above
You’ll read passages to practice pronunciation and stress.
★ “ニュースを読もう!/ Let’s Read the News!” …Advanced level
You’ll practice summarizing articles and expressing your opinions. In the 50-minute lessons, I also provide advice on pronunciation and stress.
④ Writing Lessons
★ “日本語で書いてみよう!/ Let’s Write in Japanese!” …Beginner level and above
… You’ll choose a topic and write an essay of about 400 characters.
⑤ Textbook-Based Lessons
★ “Irodori”
We’ll use an online textbook. The key feature of this lesson is that we’ll practice in specific real-life situations.
With a focus on listening and speaking practice rather than extensive grammar coverage, this course is recommended for those who want to learn vocabulary and expressions.
★ “Genki”
You’ll need to purchase the textbook. You can thoroughly learn grammar from the basics and practice speaking. Recommended for those who want to learn systematically.
★ “TRY! N4”
You’ll need to purchase the textbook. You will practice conversation using grammar. Recommended for those who have already studied N4-level grammar.
In addition, I offer assistance with interview preparation, research proposals for graduate school applications, proofreading business documents, and presentation preparation.
If you have any questions about my lessons, please don’t hesitate to send me a message.
I look forward to meeting all of you!
