Adjusting to a new environment can be an exciting but nerve-wracking event, no matter how big or small the change!
The biggest environment change for me was when I moved from my hometown, where I had lived for 23 years, to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. The culture, language, and customs were completely different from my own, and to top it off I was going all alone!
What I learned from this experience was that changes in your environment can lead to an abundance of self-growth, discovery, and fulfillment. No matter how big or small your own environment change, there are some simple steps I believe everyone can benefit from.
Bring along something that feels familiar and comfortable.
Whether you are moving homes, jobs, or countries, you can always bring something special along with you. When I moved to Vietnam, I brought pictures of my friends and family, my favorite stuffed animal, and some emergency candy bars when I needed some comfort food from home. Even when everything else felt new and unfamiliar, having things that were special to me made me feel more at ease. I hung up the pictures around my new room, and it made it feel more like home!
Do not try to adjust to everything all at once.
In my case, I was adjusting to being around new people, a new language, and even a different diet. When I felt exhausted trying to learn the language, navigate around my city, and try new foods, it was important to relax. Each day I would do something new to push myself, such as take a new bus route or try a new restaurant. However, I would also allow myself time to watch a movie in my native language, or Skype with friends and family back home. It is important not to push too hard in trying to adjust too quickly. Humans are naturally able to adapt to new enviroments. Have faith that you will, with time!
Keep in touch with friends and family.
Adjusting to a new environment can be exciting, but sometimes lonely. Remember to keep up contact with those you are close with. This will be good for stress relief, and help you to feel less lonely.
Make new friends in your new environment.
Talking with friends and family back home is important--but make sure to also work on building new connections in your new environment! Be proactive about inviting people out to grab a coffee, or visit a new museum with you. Be open to trying new experiences, and whenever you can, say yes! In my experience, exploring a new location is always more fun when you have someone else with you. Building meaningful connections in your new environment will ensure a smooth adjustment!
Be kind to yourself.
Everyone has good days and bad days. Adjusting to a new environment can produce significant changes and make you feel off-balance. Remember to take care of yourself both mentally and physcially. Do not be too hard on yourself if you have an off day, or feel that it is taking too long to adjust. Take walks, make yourself a nice meal, turn on soothing music, and if you can, take a bubble bath! Overall, remember to treat yourself with kindness and compassion, and congratulate yourself for stepping out of your comfort zone!
