Why Detroit? Jack Detroit Explains!

Jack Detroit

I am often asked, "why is your name Jack Detroit"? That is a great question. I have lived in Japan, China, and Taiwan for over 20 years. I have traveled all over Europe, the United Kingdom, North America...and beyond! BUT before I traveled, I was born and raised in America

When I was born, my parents left me in front of a Detroit Tigers (MLB team) gift shop. When the staff came to open the store in the morning they found a tiny but beautiful baby with perfect English. Since I didn't have a name, the store clerks called me Jack-'Jack' is a common name if you are too lazy to create a good name for a baby. I grew up too fast for them! They needed help!

A local auto mechanic (or car repair garage) helped when he wasn't busy fixing powerful, reliable American cars like Fords and Cadillacs. When I was a young boy, I got into a lot of trouble. But I often visited the Motown museum near Cass Corridor and the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts).

But in all that time, I didn't have a last name! When it was time to graduate high school, I realized I needed to have a last name or I couldn't get a job! Or buy a plane ticket! Or travel the world! So I chose the name of my childhood home, Detroit! Now you know why my name is Jack Detroit.

I made up this story. But if you want to know more about Detroit, one of the most interesting cities in America, please ask me! I know a lot about it. It's in my name!

Hi Jack! I thought the story was real, too! I’m also a fellow Cafetalk tutor and as a matter of fact, the city behind me in my profile pic is Detroit! I live in MI and Detroit is definitely one of my favorite cities! I also work for Jun-san at Hapa School. I know you’ve been with Cafetalk for some time, but I just saw you on Hapa Buddies and got excited about Detroit lol Catch you later!

I've been on Cafetalk for about 3 years so I'm very used to it. Even after 7 years in the bay area I still don't think I can get used to it though! See you soon!!!

Hi Jack! I thought this story was real at first. I was like oh my gosh! Welcome to Cafetalk. I'm here in the SF east bay! I've been learning Japanese casually since I was about 8 years old by the way! That's kinda what led me here!
