idiom: "to cost an arm and a leg"

Cecily G.

English idioms sound strange sometimes! There is an idiom "to cost an arm and a leg". It means something is very expensive. For example, "we could stay in a hotel in Tokyo but that would cost an arm and a leg, so we will try airbnb." (airbnb is an internet site where people rent out their own houses to visitors).
