New Year's Resolutions 2021

Kara Bird

Happy New Year!

It's January, which means it's time to make resolutions (goals) for the new year. Here are three useful phrasal verbs to help you make New Year's resolutions in English!

1. To give up
When you give something up, you stop doing something bad for you. It's very common to want to give up a bad habit at the start of a new year; for example, smoking, eating unhealthy food or spending too much time on your phone.

2. To cut out
When you cut something out, you remove it from your life. This has the same basic meaning as give up, but we usually use it when talking about food. In the New Year, you might cut out sugar or junk food from your diet.

3. To take up
When you take up an activity or hobby, you start doing it regularly. The activity can be good or bad for you; however, we usually aim to take up activities that will improve our lives at the start of a new year. Many people take up jogging or other forms of exercise. Others take up musical instruments, languages or arts and crafts.

What are your New Year's resolutions?
I hope that whatever you decide to give up, cut out or take up, you have a safe and happy 2021!
