Why Read the News in English?

Suja

Reading the news in English is a great way to build up your language skills , and an enjoyable way to practice the language as you pair it with your speaking and writing lessons.

If you aim to write and speak well, use of advanced vocabulary, idioms, phrasal verbs and the construction of both simple and complex sentence structures are important.

An article a day simply keeps the ignorance at bay! If you’re struggling for ideas during a language proficiency test, the daily read of news articles is going to help you overcome hesitations with speaking and build confidence as reading builds your knowledge and widens your horizons.

Tips When Reading News Articles:
·       Highlight discourse markers when you see them. Discourse markers connect and organise information that you see. Some examples of discourse markers are words such as Understandably, Clearly, Basically, In general, Alternatively, etc.

 ·       Identify good vocabulary when you see one and study how they’ve been used. Practice constructing sentences of your own in your notebook
