My Journey of Learning Foreign Languages

Ishan Mainali

Hello! I am Ishan from Nepal. I grew up speaking Nepali as my family language and went to an English-medium school in Nepal. I feel like Nepali and English are both my 'first-languages'. I also learnt Hindi by watching a lot of Bollywood movies. Hindi is also linguistically similar to Nepali, so it was easier for me to get it quickly.

In university, I studied Arabic for two years. When I was learning Arabic, I realized that learning the basics of any language is not difficult. For example, it is easy to learn the alphabets and basic grammar of any language. What is difficult is mastering the language.

With this understanding, I have started to learn Japanese. I am starting with the basics - alphabets. Japanese is interesting because, unlike other languages, it has three scripts. I also find Japanese grammar interesting because it is similar to Nepali grammar. It follows the SOV (Subject Object Verb) format, which is similar to the Nepali language.

I am excited to be in this journey. I will be posting updates as I learn more Japanese!

Good day!
