今週のテーマは「最近習い始めたこと」

いきなりですが、「最近〇〇を始めた」と言うとき、英語でどう表現しますか？

実は「始める」にはいろいろな言い方があるんです。

そこで、今回は習い事について話すときに使える英語表現を一緒に見ていきましょー！

■ cut your teeth on 

〔仕事などにおいて〕～で経験を積む

狩りをする動物でも、赤ちゃんの時はまだ獲物を捕まえられるほど、歯が鋭くありません。動物の肉を食べるうちに、歯が骨にあたり、だんだん鋭くなる。そして、いつか狩りができるようになる。という様子がイディオムになりました。

例文：

A summer get-together is a great way to cut your teeth on party planning.

Most journalists cut their teeth on school newspapers.

I cut my teeth on Karate, but I’ve also studied Taekwondo.

■ pick up

始める、習得する

pick upには本当にいろいろな意味があって、ここでは「新しい趣味などを始める」や「言葉などを習得する」という意味で使っています。

わざわざ時間を使って勉強するというよりは、自然に覚えた、自然にはじまった、というニュアンスを持つ言葉です。

例文：

Some sports are easy to pick up, but hard to master.

I picked up a lot of English while working in an international company.

I picked up fishing while living in Wyoming.

■ be into

〜に興味がある

I’mnot really into outdoorsy things.

What kind of stuff areyouinto?

My little sister is really into V-tubers.

■ get into

やり始める、最近始める

「興味がわく、夢中になる」というニュアンスを持つ “get into”. 

I’ve really gotten into board game design recently.

A lot of Americans got really into karate in the 80’s.

How did you get into hockey?

■ take up

（趣味など新しく）始める

“take up”は「お金を払って学ぶ」ニュアンスが強くなります。まさに習い事を始めたと言う時に使うといい英語です。

You should take up a hobby. It’s a great way to forget about work.

I took up piano a little late back in junior school.

Why did you take up dance?

■ lose interest

〜に飽きる、興味を失う

I’ve lost interest in studying English.

I lost interest in studying after I started working full time.

A few students lose interest every semester and quit early.

■ lost its spark

目新しさがなくなる

「興味がなくなる」という意味にも近いんですが、「以前は熱烈に大好きだったのに、今はその情熱を失った」というニュアンスを持ちます。

English has sort of lost its spark.

For me, videogames have lost their spark.

Piano has lost its spark.

■ keep up

継続する、頑張り続ける

It’s hard to keep up training every week, but it’s worth it.

I read what I can to keep up with my English.

I haven’t really been keeping up with my ballet routine.
