Continuing from my 5 English idioms related to fear column post, we’ll look at some idioms related to blood next in this Halloween-themed series.


bad blood


Meaning: feelings of hate between people because of arguments in the past


Example: “There has been bad blood between the two families for years.”


to make one’s blood boil


Meaning: to cause someone to be very angry


Example: “Reading that kind of nonsense just makes my blood boil.”


in one’s blood


Meaning: innate, as of a skill or quality


Example: “She knows how to play. Music is in her blood.”


to make one’s blood run cold


Meaning: to make someone feel extremely frightened


Example: “I heard a tapping on the window which made my blood run cold.”


blood, sweat, and tears


Meaning: extremely hard work, or the greatest effort possible, in order to achieve something


Example: “They had given their blood, sweat, and tears to getting the restaurant up and running.”
