Quick tips: wanna, gonna, hafta, sorta, etc.

Zach McLaughlin

As most of you probably already know, sounds often blend together in spoken English. “Want to” sounds like “wanna,” “going to” sounds like “gonna,” “have to” sounds like “hafta,” “sort of” sounds like “sorta,” etc. This occurs quite naturally in casual spoken English, though you may want to avoid it in very formal situations or when you want to be clearly understood.

In writing, however, the use of words like “wanna” is much more deliberate, so your choices can reflect some aspect of your personality/identity. You should be careful about who you’re writing such words to. Using these kinds of words in writing is extremely informal and is generally only done in personal texts, especially by younger people.

When I receive a message containing a word like “wanna,” I assume the writer is young, lazy, or doesn’t know how to use the word properly yet. Of course, not everyone thinks this way, and for others, it may be quite normal.

In general, I don’t advise using “wanna” in your writing just to try to sound natural. If it suits your personality and it’s in an appropriately informal context, go ahead. Otherwise, feel free to use it in speaking but avoid it in writing (as I do).
