Quick tips: in the blink of an eye

Zach McLaughlin

There are plenty of ways to express the quick passage of time in English. The most well-known is probably “time flies,” as in “Time flies when you’re having fun!” But have you ever heard “in the blink of an eye”?

This idiom means “very quickly” and can be used to say things like “These days, fall goes by in the blink of an eye” or “It seems like my 30s passed in the blink of an eye.”

Another useful expression is “before you know it,” which means “very soon” or “very quickly.” This can also express the quick passage of time in sentences like “Christmas will be here before you know it” or “Before you know it, your kids have grown up and had kids of their own.”

What seems to pass in the blink of an eye for you?
