On sunny days, we love to have a braai and swim in the pool.
But what do we South Africans like to do on rainy days?
Make pancakes and play Rummikub, of course!
Many South Africans have the tradition of eating pancakes on the day of the first rain - and any other rainy day, just because we can!
Our pancakes look different from American-style or Japanese-style pancakes, which are both quite thick. South African pancakes are thin, like French crêpes (but the ingredients are slightly different).
When they are cooked, we like to sprinkle a blend of cinnamon and sugar on our pancakes, and sometimes a few drops of lemon juice or "golden syrup".
Here is a simple recipe.
Ingredients:
- 3 eggs
- 75 ml oil
- 15 ml vinegar
- 2 cups of cake flour
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 700 ml water
- Lemon juice or golden syrup (optional)
Method:
- Whisk the eggs, oil and vinegar in a bowl.
- In a different bowl, mix the cake flour, baking powder, and salt (all the dry ingredients).
- Next, add a little bit of the dry ingredients to the first bowl. Mix, then add a little bit of water and mix again.
- Repeat the process of adding and mixing until everything is combined. Now you have a pancake batter!
- Add a small amount of oil to a medium hot pan and add a thin layer of pancake batter.
- After the bottom is cooked (1-2 minutes), flip the pancake over and cook the other side.
- Remove place the pancake on a plate and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Roll the pancake using your fingers or the tines of a fork and enjoy!
Now that the food is ready, let's play Rummikub!
The Rummikub boardgame has been enjoyed by generations of South Africans. I was first taught how to play by my grandmother.
Rummikub is played with plastic tiles in 4 different colours. Like the card game rummy, the goal is to make sets of similar tiles to win the game.
I hope it will rain soon so that I can make some pancakes and enjoy a game of Rummikub with my family!
