In Japan, we celebrate the New Year by eating osechi and ozoni. And then some people write Kakizome shodo and karuta at the beginning of the New Year, and some of the children in my class have also done their New Year Kakizome homework together.

I have also decided to start teaching Japanese at Citizen's University this year, and I have also started teaching online at Cafetalk. I will continue to keep you informed about special offers related to the Japanese language in this column.
The first announcement early this year will be a haiku competition for children. As many people know haiku, is the world's shortest poem. This year's competition is for children under 16 yearts old to write a haiku in English and submit it with drawing pictures.

Participation is rewarding, but the awards of the competition are the attraction such as a flight to Japan. See the link above for more information. A video on how to make haiku is available below.
