5 Green Tips for a Cooler Summer

周间主题: How to stay cool in the heat of July

Sumera A.

Here are 5 tips that I can vouch for, coming from one of the more famously warm climates of the world:

1) Having more yogurt/curd with your meals, or in between, keeps the body temperature low. Try chopped vegetables and fruit (like cucumbers, tomatoes, pommegranate) with plain yogurt and salt. You could even try making spiced buttermilk to stay hydrated!

2) Avoid warm spices (like cinnamon, cardamom and pepper), which are more popular in winter recipes around the world for a reason!

3) Exercise - even just minimally. Breaking a sweat helps your body recalibrate its temperature.

4) In India stone/granite tile is way more common than carpet, mats or laminate flooring. Since I try to keep my carbon footprint low, I avoid the AC and sit on the floor more. It cools the skin.

5) Keeping a spray-bottle full of water handy is nice for spritzing yourself with, especially when sitting under a fan - try spritzing your bed and pillow too!

An extra tip: I can't prove this works, but: relax. Sacrifice pace for efficiency in the heat. Take it easy and enjoy feeling the contrast of cooling pleasures in scorching circumstances.

In India, the dangerously hot season is over by June. July is the monsoon season here, where generally the days are cooled by winds pulling in scans of rain and sunless days. Around this time of year, people are pulling out their cardigans, though it's just 26 degrees. It's both a beautiful time to visit, and an inconvenient one due to traffic!

Cheers~!
