Mwaka Kogwa festival of Tanzania!

周间主题: Summer festivals!

Judith Simpasa

Mwaka Kogwa is a vibrant and colorful festival celebrated in Zanzibar, Tanzania. This festival marks the Shirazi New Year and usually takes place in July. The people of Makunduchi, a town in Zanzibar, come together to celebrate with traditional rituals, lively songs, and energetic dances.

One of the most fascinating parts of Mwaka Kogwa is the mock fight. Men from different parts of the town use banana stems to playfully hit each other, symbolizing the clearing of bad feelings to start the new year fresh.

Women also play a key role in the festival. They dress in their finest clothes, sing traditional songs, and walk around the village, blessing houses and people. The festival ends with a grand feast, where everyone enjoys local delicacies and dances late into the night. Mwaka Kogwa is a beautiful celebration of culture, community, and new beginnings.
