I have lived many places in my lifetime. Actually, I have moved perhaps more than ten times including two different junior high schools, two different high schools, and two different universities. Among all the places I've lived, I think Shizuoka prefecture in Japan holds a special place in my heart. Not many people tend to stop by there as it can be quite countryside but I'd like to recommend a trip there in the spring.
If you’re looking for a peaceful way to experience the beauty of Japan, hop on a train ride along the Oigawa River—it’s a journey you’ll never forget. The Oigawa Railway, a charming little line in Shizuoka Prefecture, takes you through lush forests, past picturesque mountains, and right alongside the tranquil river, offering some of the most breathtaking views you can imagine.
As you settle into your seat, the train feels like a step back in time. Some of the trains are vintage, adding a nostalgic touch to the whole experience. You’ll find yourself gazing out the window, watching the river shimmer beneath the hills that roll on in the distance. Each season brings a new kind of magic—spring brings cherry blossoms, while autumn turns the landscape into a sea of vibrant reds and golds. It’s the perfect way to unwind and soak in the peace of nature.
And if you’re a green tea lover, you’re in for a treat in Kakegawa. The green tea here is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted: delicate, refreshing, and a tad bit sweet. You can even visit the local tea farms, sip on freshly brewed tea, and get a glimpse of the process behind this iconic drink, from picking the leaves to preparing the perfect cup. It’s an experience that goes beyond just drinking tea—it’s a chance to connect with the land and tradition of the region.
I highly recommend going to the top of Awagatake Mountain where a small restaurant sits with an amazing view over looking the mountains and hills of green tea. You might even have the chance to see the green tea bushes grown in the shape of the kanji "CHA".
While you're in Kakegawa stop by Kakegawa Castle. In spring, the castle grounds are transformed into a sea of pink as cherry blossoms bloom in full force. Walking around the castle, you’ll be surrounded by the soft fragrance of the flowers, and the sight of the delicate blossoms against the backdrop of the ancient stone walls is simply magical. The view from the castle tower, with the cherry trees in full bloom, is one of the most iconic sights of the season.
I hope I've inspired you to ride the train along the Oigawa railway and make a restful stop in Kakegawa.
