Helping Your Child Learn English at Home

Aspen Kumagai

Learning English as a foreign language can be fun and exciting — especially when parents and children do it together! You don’t need to be an expert in English to help your child. Just a little time and encouragement each day can make a big difference.

Here are some easy tips to help you teach English at home:

1. Use English in Everyday Life

Try using simple English words during daily routines. For example:

  • When giving food: “Here is your apple.”

  • When getting dressed: “Let’s put on your socks.”

  • At bedtime: “Good night. Sweet dreams!”

Little phrases like this help children get used to English naturally.

2. Read English Books Together

Even if your child doesn’t understand everything, reading English books builds vocabulary and listening skills. Choose books with lots of pictures and short sentences.

Look for books like:

  • “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?”

  • “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”

  • Or any picture books with simple words

3. Sing Songs and Watch Simple Videos

Children love music! Songs help with memory and pronunciation. Try singing:

  • “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”

  • “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

You can also watch short English cartoons on YouTube (with subtitles if needed). Just be sure they are safe and age-appropriate.

4. Make Learning a Game

Turn English into play! Try:

  • Playing “Simon Says” (e.g., “Simon says touch your nose”)

  • Coloring pages and naming colors in English

  • Matching flashcards (like animals, food, or toys)

Children learn best when they’re having fun.

 5. Be Patient and Encourage

Don’t worry if your child makes mistakes. That’s part of learning! Say things like:

  • “Great job!”

  • “I’m proud of you.”

  • “Let’s try together.”

Your support and smiles make your child feel safe to try and learn.

Final Tip: A Little Every Day

You don’t need long lessons. Just 10–15 minutes a day in English can help a lot. Short, regular practice is better than long lessons once a week.

You Can Do It!
Learning English at home is a journey you and your child can enjoy together. You’re not just teaching a language — you’re building confidence, curiosity, and connection. Keep it simple, have fun, and celebrate every small step!
