IELTS Listening Test: Everything You Need to Know

IELTS Listening can be tough, right? Especially when it comes to maps and multiple-choice questions!

If you're currently around a 6.5, shadowing or transcribing can help level up your listening skills.
If not quite there yet, don't worry! focus on improving your general English first!

By that, I mean exposing yourself to as much English as possible — whether it's listening to podcasts and summarizing them, or reading articles and describing the main idea in your own words.
Plus, work on Predicting the type of answer you're listening for.

When you read each question, ask yourself:
Is the answer going to be a number? A name? A place? A time?
Or maybe a reason or description?

Example:

Question:
What time does the train to Bristol depart?
Probably a
 time?!

When you know you're listening for a time, you can focus your ears for:
1. Numbers
2. Time expressions (e.g., “in the morning,” “just before 9,” “at half past 7”)
!!! Possible distractors (e.g., “It used to leave at 7, but now it departs at 7:30.”)--These are the bad guys in IELTS Listening, thus always watch out for BUT or HOWEVER!

Once you’re at a higher level, some tips and tricks really come in handy:

  1. Identifying keywords in the questions

  2. Taking notes

  3. ...

I'll be diving deeper into each of these soon.
Is there a particular question type you’re struggling with? Comment below! ??
