先週の土曜日、わたしの子どもの はじめての運動会（うんどうかい） がありました。
Last Saturday, my child had his very first sports day.
日本では、運動会を秋に行う学校や地域（ちいき）が多いです。
In Japan, many schools and communities hold sports day events in autumn.
秋は「スポーツの秋」と言われ、体を動かすのにとてもいい季節です。
Autumn is often called “the season for sports” in Japan, and it is a very good time to be active.
「日本の保育園の運動会では、何をするの？」と気になる人もいると思います。
You may wonder, “What do children actually do at a sports day in a Japanese nursery school?”
今日は、わたしの子どもの保育園の運動会で行ったことを紹介します。
Today, I’d like to introduce what my child’s class did.
① 徒競走（ときょうそう）
Footrace (Tookyousou / ときょうそう)
子どもが一人ずつ、コースを走ります。
Children run one by one on a short course.
赤ちゃんクラスでは、はいはいでゴールを目指していました。
For the babies’ class, they crawled all the way to the goal!
走る前に、先生が名前を呼ぶと、子どもたちは大きな声で「はい！」と返事をします。
Before running, the teacher called each child’s name, and the children answered loudly, “Hai!” (“Yes!”).
わたしの子どもは、ゴールの前で止まってしまい、先生と手をつないでゴールしました。
My child stopped just before the finish line, so the teacher held his hand and they crossed the line together.
「ひとりで走るのがいやだったのかな？」と思いました。
I thought, “Maybe he didn’t want to run alone?”
② ダンス
音楽に合わせて、先生といっしょに踊（おど）ります。
The children danced to music together with the teachers.
元気に踊る子もいれば、緊張（きんちょう）して立っているだけの子もいました。
Some children danced energetically, while others were nervous and just stood still.
わたしの子どもも、最初は踊っていましたが、後半は動かなくなってしまいました（笑）。
My child danced at the beginning, but in the second half he froze and stopped moving (haha).
③ 親子競技（きょうぎ）（おやこといっしょにする競技）
Parent–Child Activity
親と子どもがいっしょに楽しむ競技です。
This is a game where parents and children play together.
わたしのこどものクラスでは、「トトロのどんぐり拾い」をしました。
In my child class, we did “Totoro’s Acorn Collecting Game.”
『となりのトトロ』は、日本の有名なジブリ映画です。
My Neighbor Totoro is a very famous Studio Ghibli movie in Japan.
親子でどんぐりを拾って、いっしょにゴールを目指しました。
Parents and children collected acorns that Totoro had dropped, and then ran to the goal together.
わたしの子どもは走り出すのが遅く、最後にゴールしました。
でも、ゴールしたときはとてもうれしそうな顔をしていました。
My child started running slowly and finished last,
but when he crossed the goal line, he had such a big happy smile on his face.
今回の運動会では「徒競走・ダンス・親子競技」の3つだけでした。
At this sports day, we only had three activities: the footrace, the dance, and the parent–child game.
でも、上のクラスになると、
However, in higher classes, children do more active events such as:
玉入れ（たまいれ）
Tamaire (throwing balls into a basket)
リレー（チームで走る）
Relay races (running in teams)
障害物競走（しょうがいぶつきょうそう）
Obstacle races
など、もっと体をたくさん動かす競技があります。

In elementary school, there are also many fun events like:
大玉転がし（おおだまころがし）
Oodama korogashi (rolling a huge ball)
デカパンリレー（大きなズボンをはいて走る）
Dekapan relay (two people wearing one big pair of pants and running together)
借り物競走（かりものきょうそう）
Kari-mono race (borrowing an item during the race)
など、おもしろい競技もたくさんあります。
運動会は、子どもの成長を見ることができる、とても特別なイベントです。
Sports day is a very special event where parents can see their children’s growth and effort.
