How are you doing today? I hope you're having a good day!
Do you know much about prepositions? I'm sure you've learned "prepositions of time" and "prepositions of place." Today, I'd like to talk about prepositions related to transportation. Why don't you say "in" a bus, instead of "on" a bus? Do you know the difference? I think the explanation below with the chart above will help you clarify the confusion.

Prepositions of Transport

We use by to talk about the general way or method of traveling.

Example: I go to school by bus. / She traveled by plane.

Reason: By focuses on the method of transport, not the specific vehicle. That’s why we don’t use an article (“a” or “the”) after by.

Not: by the bus (wrong in this case).

On

We use on when we mean we are physically on or inside a large, shared form of transport where you can walk around.

Example: I’m on the bus. / She’s on the train. / We were on the plane.

Reason: These are vehicles with floors that people can stand, sit, or move on. So we say on a bus/train/plane/ship.

We use in when we are inside a smaller or private vehicle.
-
Example: I’m in the car. / He’s in a taxi.

Reason: These vehicles are small, enclosed spaces, so we think of being inside them.

前置詞についてよくご存じですか？きっと「時間の前置詞」や「場所の前置詞」は習ったことがあると思います。今日は交通に関する前置詞についてお話ししたいと思います。どうして「in a bus」とは言わずに「on a bus」と言うのでしょうか？その違いをご存じですか？下の説明と上の図を見れば、この混乱がきっと解消できると思います。
交通に関する前置詞
By
「by」は移動の一般的な方法や手段について話すときに使います。
例：I go to school by bus.（私はバスで学校に行きます。）
She traveled by plane.（彼女は飛行機で旅行しました。）
理由：「by」は移動手段に焦点を当てるので、後ろに冠詞（a や the）はつきません。
Not: by the bus（この場合は間違い）
On
「on」は、大きくて共有されている乗り物の上または中にいて、歩き回ることができる場合に使います。
例：I’m on the bus.（私はバスに乗っています。）
She’s on the train.（彼女は電車に乗っています。）
We were on the plane.（私たちは飛行機に乗っていました。）
理由：これらは床があり、人が立ったり座ったり移動できる乗り物です。そのため「on a bus/train/plane/ship」と言います。
In
「in」は、小さな乗り物や個人的な乗り物の中にいるときに使います。
例：I’m in the car.（私は車に乗っています。）
He’s in a taxi.（彼はタクシーに乗っています。）
理由：これらは小さくて囲まれた空間なので、私たちは「中にいる」と考えます。
