Hello, with the new year beginning, I think many people are setting various goals and thinking about what kind of year they want to make it.
From ancient Greece through the Roman era, there seem to have been two major currents in life philosophy.
One was Stoicism, and the other was Epicureanism.
Stoicism teaches that misfortunes and hardships are natural and should be accepted as they come, and that one should strive above all to live virtuously. Doing so, they believed, leads to true happiness. This is where the word “stoic” comes from.
Epicureanism, on the other hand, says, “Come on, let’s not be so rigid.” Life certainly has unpleasant and painful moments, but we can ease them through pleasure. What matters most is peace of mind.
So, which way of life do you choose? Which do you aim for?
As for me, I’m an Epicurean!
Well… though I have to admit, Stoicism does sound kind of cool too! ??
