Hiking the Great Wall of China

Clizia Mondini

Today I would like to talk about one of the most adventurous and incredible experiences of my life: hiking a remote area of the Great Wall of China solo.

The Great Wall of China is located in northern China, stretching for thousands of kilometers across mountains, valleys, and deserts. In October 2024, during my two-week trip to Beijing, I decided to go on a long hike on the Great Wall from Jinshanling to Gubeikou.

This area of the wall is known to be wilder and more remote. While the Jinshanling section is partially restored, the Gubeikou section is mostly unrestored, offering unique scenery and rugged terrain.

This is a 15+ km hike that usually takes about six hours to complete. It is a remote and not crowded path, where you can spend hours walking and peacefully embracing the scenery without many other people around.
