Hello everyone!
As an English learner, you might sometimes feel like you’re studying hard but not seeing the progress you want. The good news is that learning a language isn't just about studying more, but studying smarter.
Here are 5 simple tips I share with all my students to help make your English journey faster, easier, and more fun!
1. Don’t Study, "Acquire" with Easy Input
If you study from a textbook for an hour, you get tired. But if you watch a fun movie or read an interesting article, you can do it for hours without getting bored. This is "acquisition."
The Tip: Spend more time with English that is easy for you to understand (about 80-90%). Listen to English podcasts on your walk to school, watch your favorite YouTube videos with English subtitles, or read simple news websites. This builds your "feel" for the language naturally, just like a child learns.
2. Speak to Yourself (Yes, Really!)
Many students are shy and wait for a partner to practice speaking. But you can practice anytime, anywhere—by yourself!
The Tip: Narrate your day in English. When you wake up, say, "Okay, I need to brush my teeth and make breakfast." When you walk outside, think, "The weather is sunny today, and that man is walking his dog." It sounds strange at first, but it trains your brain to form English sentences quickly without the pressure of talking to someone else.
3. Learn Words in "Chunks," Not Alone
Learning individual words is like having single bricks. You don't know how to build a house with them. Learning "chunks" is like having ready-made walls.
The Tip: Don't just learn the word "make." Learn the chunk "make the bed." Don't just learn "heavy." Learn "heavy rain." When you learn words in groups that naturally go together, your speaking becomes smoother and more natural because you don't have to stop and think about grammar.
4. Imitate, Don't Just Repeat
There’s a difference between repeating a word and imitating it. Repeating is just saying the word. Imitating is trying to copy the feeling, the speed, and the music of the voice.
The Tip: Choose your favorite actor or YouTuber. Play a short sentence, pause the video, and try to sound exactly like them. Copy their emotion, their pauses, and their intonation. This is the secret to reducing your accent and sounding more fluent.
5. Consistency Beats Intensity
Studying for 3 hours on a Sunday is good, but studying for 20 minutes every day is magic. Your brain needs to see English every day to keep it at the front of your mind.
The Tip: Make English a small daily habit. Use a language app for 10 minutes while you drink your morning coffee, read one English news headline, or change your phone’s language to English. Small, daily actions create huge results over time.
Which one of these will you try this week? Let me know in the comments, or we can practice together in my next lesson!
