Deciding to Move to Taiwan for a "Special" Reason, Despite Having ZERO Interest in Chinese! [Part 2]

Megu3

Hello everyone! I'm Meg, currently living in Taiwan.

It’s been raining on and off where I live today, which makes it less hot and quite refreshingly cool.

Alright, today I’m going to share the continuation of my last story: "Why on earth did I decide to go to Taiwan?"

By the way... before I actually moved here, I had never even visited Taiwan once. To be completely honest, I had absolutely no interest in Chinese-speaking countries at the time (haha).

"Then why did you go?!" you might ask.

As I mentioned in my previous post, it was simply because "someone offered me a job." The job was to be a kindergarten teacher. The requirements were very simple: "Must be a native Japanese speaker," "A one-year contract," and "No experience required."

Yes, as some of you might have already guessed, I had never worked at a kindergarten before, nor had I ever taught Japanese. In fact, I used to feel a bit uncomfortable with the idea of being a teacher, so I had zero interest in becoming a Japanese language teacher at all.

So, why did someone like me decide to pack my bags for Taiwan?

Actually, at that time, I was aiming to become a Flight Attendant (Cabin Crew). I thought to myself, "Hey, if I have experience teaching at an overseas kindergarten, that would look unique and awesome on my resume!" That was my first reason.

The second reason was that a friend of mine who had been to Taiwan told me, "Oh, Japanese works perfectly fine in Taiwan!" Hearing that, I completely relaxed and thought, "Wow, so I don't even need to know Chinese!"

"It's just for one year, Japanese is fine, and it's good for my resume. Alright, let's do this!" With that burst of energy, I made up my mind to move to Taiwan.

...However. The very moment I arrived at the airport in Taiwan, the only thing that crossed my mind was this:

"Wait... THIS IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED AT ALL!!!!!"

What on earth went wrong? I’ll tell you all about the chaotic start of my life in Taiwan in the next column, so stay tuned!

☕️ A Little Note from Meg "I've also jumped into a foreign country with nothing but passion!" "I want to hear about your journey aiming to be a flight attendant!"
