How to Stay Cool and Productive in the Summer

Miklos

Hello everyone!

This past 3-day weekend, I went camping with my sons in the mountains just outside of Sendai.

It was a really nice chance to get away from our normal routine. We enjoyed the fresh air, cooked lots of good food, spent time outside, and relaxed together.

Of course, summer camping is not always easy.

It can be hot during the day. And humid! You need to drink enough water, find shade, take breaks, and not push too hard. If you try to do everything at full speed in the summer heat, you will probably get tired very quickly.

That made me think about studying and working in summer too.

In the summer, it can be hard to stay focused. The weather is hot, your body feels tired, and sometimes your motivation goes down. But with a few small changes, it’s still possible to stay cool and productive.

Start early if you can

In summer, mornings are often easier than afternoons.

If you have something important to do, try starting earlier in the day.

This could be...
  • studying English
  • doing homework
  • preparing for work
  • exercising
  • cleaning your room
  • writing a short journal

You don’t need to wake up extremely early. Even starting a little earlier can help.

When your mind is fresh and the air is cooler, it’s easier to focus.

Make your goal smaller

Hot weather can make big goals feel heavier.

So instead of saying, “I’ll study for two hours,” try a smaller goal.

For example...
  • I’ll study for 15 minutes.
  • I’ll review 5 new words.
  • I’ll write 3 sentences.
  • I’ll listen to one short video.
  • I’ll practice speaking for one minute.

Small goals are not lazy (at least that's what I tell myself). They are smart.

When your energy is low, small goals help you keep moving without feeling overwhelmed.

Take real breaks

When we were camping, we didn’t stay in the sun all day. We took breaks. We sat in the shade. We drank water and cold barley tea. We slowed down.

Studying and working are the same.

A good break can help you come back with more energy.

But be careful. A “quick break” with your phone can easily become 30 minutes.

Sometimes a better break is...
  • drinking water
  • stretching
  • walking around the room
  • looking outside
  • washing your face
  • sitting quietly for a few minutes

A real break should help your brain rest.

Keep your space comfortable

Your study space doesn’t need to be perfect, but it should be comfortable.

Use a fan or air conditioner if you can. Keep water nearby. Move to a cooler room if possible. Wear comfortable clothes.

If your body feels too hot, your brain has to work harder just to stay focused.

Comfort is not a luxury. It helps you learn better!

Choose lighter study activities

On very hot days, you may not want to do your most difficult study task.

That’s okay!

You can choose lighter English practice, such as...
  • reviewing old notes
  • listening to easy English
  • reading a short article
  • watching a short video
  • writing about your day
  • practicing useful daily phrases

You can still make progress without doing the hardest thing every time.

Don’t forget your energy

Summer can be fun, but it can also be tiring. So please take care of your energy.

Drink water. Rest when you need to. Eat well. Sleep enough.

This is important for students, adults, and teachers too.

Being productive does not mean doing everything all the time.

It means using your energy wisely.

A small summer challenge

Here is a simple challenge for a hot summer day...
  • 5 minutes: review
  • 5 minutes: listen
  • 5 minutes: speak
  • 5 minutes: write

That is only 20 minutes.

But if you do it often, it can really help.

Summer is a season for fun, family, travel, and rest. But it can also be a season for small, steady progress.

Stay cool, take breaks, and keep going little by little.
