Today is Doyo no Ushi no Hi, a traditional summer day in Japan. "Doyo" does not mean Saturday. It refers to a seasonal period that comes before each new season, and Ushi (Ox) is one of the twelve zodiac signs once used to count the days.
On this day, many people eat grilled eel because it is believed to help people stay healthy during the hot summer. Some people also eat foods that begin with the Japanese sound "u", as they are considered lucky.
Are there any special foods that people eat in your country during seasonal changes or on special occasions?
