An online friend of mine from Japan says that autumn is arguably the best time to visit. According to him, the country undergoes a complete transformation during this season. The main highlight of the Japanese autumn is the *momiji*—the red maple leaves. The *momiji* season runs from late September in the north to early December in the south. In autumn, people in Japan admire the vibrant foliage with the same passion they reserve for cherry blossoms in the spring. The trees turn shades of crimson, fiery orange, and gold.
Plus, the weather is very pleasant. The stifling summer heat and prolonged rains finally give way to a refreshing coolness and clear skies. It is a sheer delight to spend the whole day walking around—and I love walking; it’s my favorite thing to do in any new place.
You can also sample seasonal delicacies. Autumn offers dishes made with fresh chestnuts, roasted sweet potatoes, and Pacific saury.
My friend mentioned that if you want to see the classic autumn scenery found in guidebooks, you should head to Kyoto. The ancient temples surrounded by blazing maple trees look incredible.
For nature lovers, the Hakone region is a great choice; in good weather, it offers a view of Mount Fuji.
What else do you think there is to see in Japan during the autumn?
