先生が教えてくれたこと

周间主题: A person who has inspired me

What My Teacher Taught Me

English education in Japanese schools has long been criticized. Even today, many people argue that an education system focused too heavily on reading, writing, and grammar fails to develop students’ ability to communicate in English.

I used to be influenced by these opinions and took my English grammar classes lightly. When I was in high school, I failed my grammar tests, but I never thought it was a serious problem.

One day, our teacher returned our test papers. As he handed me mine, which showed a score in the mid-thirties, he asked me a question.

“Did you study?”

Our teacher asked this question whenever he returned tests to students who had received low scores. I found it annoying, so I always gave the same answer.

“Yes.”

But that day, he did not immediately hand my paper back. Instead, he looked straight into my eyes and asked again.

“Did you really study?”

He knew perfectly well that I had not studied at all.

Then he said something that I have never forgotten.

“It is true that knowledge of grammar does not necessarily translate into the ability to speak English. I’m not going to deny that. But never give up on making an effort. The ability to work hard will always help you in life. Just this once, would you try your best on the next test?”

There was a little over a month until the next test, and I studied English grammar harder than I ever had before.

The result? I scored well above the class average.

When he returned our papers, my teacher asked me the same question again.

“Did you study?”

“Yes.”

It was the same exchange as always, but this time, I was telling the truth.

“Well done. Never forget the importance of making an effort.”

From that point on, I never failed another English grammar test.

Later, I graduated from high school and went to study in the United States. Even after returning to Japan and starting my career, I never found it painful to work hard toward a goal.

Looking back, I realize that my teacher taught me much more than English grammar. He gave me the experience of making a genuine effort and seeing the results for myself. More importantly, he taught me the value of hard work.

I now believe that when my teacher asked me, “Did you really study?” he was doing more than simply checking whether I had prepared for a test.

He believed in a potential that even I had failed to recognize in myself, and he gave me the opportunity to discover what I could achieve through my own efforts.

My teacher taught me more than English. He taught me that the willingness to make an effort can become a powerful force that helps us shape our own lives.
