What “Success” Means to Me: Making a Difference, One Lesson at a Time

Tess Van

What "Success" Means to Me

For me, success isn't about money, titles, or how many lessons I teach. It's about the lives I touch along the way.

Yes, I feel successful when a student finally understands something that confused them last week. I feel successful when someone who used to hesitate before speaking begins to answer with confidence. And I feel successful when a student tells me their English is improving, and I know my lessons played a part in that.

But my success doesn't stop with my students. It's also in my own children, in the people around me, and in anyone whose life I've been able to influence in a positive way. Knowing that I've made a difference, even a small one, means more to me than any achievement on paper.

Being able to speak English doesn't automatically make someone a good teacher. Teaching takes dedication, patience, and the willingness to adjust to every student. Some learn quickly, some need more time, and each one deserves a teacher who respects their pace. It also takes empathy, because not every student comes to a lesson only to study grammar. Some come because they need someone to listen to them, someone who will talk with them, encourage them, and appreciate them as a person. Sometimes the most important lesson isn't about English at all. It's about feeling heard.

When a student leaves our lesson knowing a little more English, or simply feeling a little lighter than when they arrived, that is success to me.

Their growth is my success. Their smiles are my reward. And I'm grateful to be part of their journey.
