Success, Redefined

每週主題: What “success” means to me

Teacher.Adi

Just as change is the only constant in the world, diversity is an undeniable part of our lives. Ironically, our differences are among the things we have in common. We have different lifestyles, personalities, and perspectives, yet these differences coexist so naturally within us. Someone can enjoy silence and abhor drama while still wanting to interact with friends. Someone can achieve great things yet prefer to remain low-key. These differences make each person unique and shape how we see the world. Even a single concept can mean different things to different people, evoking memories, describing experiences, or carrying meanings shaped by their circumstances. Its meaning can also change as a person moves through different stages of life.

Success is one such concept. When I was an elementary student, success meant finishing my studies and earning a bachelor's degree. When I entered high school as a teenager, it meant pursuing a prestigious career—becoming a lawyer, a doctor, or a famous artist. By the time I entered college, however, success had come to mean achieving financial stability and having the freedom to travel around the world without constantly worrying about my financial security. Today, as an educator, success also means being competent in my profession and witnessing my students' progress in learning. It means being part of their journey and helping them achieve their own versions of success.

Frankly, becoming a teacher was never part of my plans. The experiences my former teachers and mentors shared should have discouraged me from pursuing the profession. But fate can be a mischievous thing, and voilà! Here I am, a licensed professional teacher, working in a field that allows me to explore a language I have always loved—a language that has shown me the power of mere words to create entire worlds.

Looking back, I realize that success is no longer just about earning a degree, pursuing a prestigious career, or achieving financial stability. It is also about finding fulfillment in what I do and making a difference in the lives of others. If I can help my students achieve their language goals, inspire them to appreciate the beauty of the English language, and earn a decent living along the way, I would consider that a meaningful achievement. Perhaps success will mean something different to me again in the years to come, but for now, it means becoming the kind of English teacher who helps learners grow, discover their potential, and pursue their own versions of success.
