Yoga Styles Explained! - Part 2

2017年9月21日

So if you have been following my columns, by now you should know your 'hatha' yoga from your 'hot' yoga, and your 'asana' from your 'ayurveda'. If you haven't been following please take a look back here:

In todays writing, I will continue explaining the basic physical styles of yoga which are commonly seen in today's day and age.

1. Ashtanga - This is a practice which was originally brought to the west by legendary yoga master - 'K. Pattabhi Jois' (pronounced 'PAH-TAH-BEE JOYCE') in the 1970's. This style follows a specific sequence, performed in the same order every time and each pose is linked by the breath.

2. 'Yin' or 'Restorative' yoga - This style is known for being highly beneficial for repairing the body from physical damage. It is often used by athletes who engage in physical sports which cause trauma to the body, and also those who want to develop their deep flexibility without causing strain. Expect long poses of 3-6 minutes in this class and lots of effortless, deep flexibility. (This is personal favourite style of mine as I find it very effective at combatting the damage I have caused to myself, from years of hard martial arts and ultra marathon running!)

3. 'Vinyasa' (pronounced - 'VINN-YA-SA) or 'Power' Yoga - This is a fast paced and often intense, style of yoga which is loosely based on the Ashtanga style described above. The sequence and poses are not the same each time, which makes it popular with modern day practitioners, and it is often taught in gym studios in the West. Expect lots of fast flowing movements linked by the breath!
