In Australia's SBS news, there was a broadcast on Adelaide Language Festival held at Adelaide University.
Mr. Stuart Blair, the linguist, said in the festival, "It doesn't matter what language you learn, they are all going to give you that enhanced analytical ability. Learning a language increases brain nutrition, especially in your older years." That's a great news to us :)
Mr. Zuckermann, who speaks 13 languages and is able to read another 17, believes that there are seven characteristics of learning a new language successfully. I will list them below.
1. Mathematical ability
2. Musicality
3. Memory
4. Emotional intelligence
5. motivation
6. Have a high IQ IQが高い
7. Have no shame
He also says, "If you feel you do not want to lose face, then it's harder to learn a language because you might be afraid of making a mistake." When you consider Japanese culture and values, this might be quite challenging to all English learners who are Japanese.
Even now, after living overseas for more than 17 years, I still make mistakes and try to learn something new every day. I made numerous silly mistakes in the past, but what I think more important than being perfect in English is to be able to laugh at myself when I do make mistakes... And I have so many laughable memories from my students' mistakes and my own... lol! As a teacher, being able to create a space where students can feel safe and okay about making mistakes is so important. What do you think??
