This lesson focuses on developing the vocabulary and understanding the concepts necessary for safe and effective stretching in Japanese martial arts. Students will learn the Japanese terms for major muscle groups (e.g., hamstrings, hip flexors) and movements (e.g., stretching, bending, extending). The lesson will emphasize proper terminology for specific stretches commonly used in martial arts, such as those targeting the shoulders, back, and groin. We will explore the etymology of these terms and their connection to the principles of body mechanics in Japanese martial arts. Key concepts such as kihon (basics) and their application to flexibility training will be discussed, along with the importance of kokyu (breathing) and chushin(center) in maintaining proper form and maximizing the benefits of stretching. Students will also learn about the cultural significance of flexibility and body awareness in Japanese martial tra

ditions.
