For every new student, I like to shape the first lesson around their needs and personality. Before anything else, I try to adjust my schedule so our lessons can be consistent. At the same time, I’m clear about the times when I’m not available, so the student always knows what to expect.
In the first class, I ask a few careful questions to understand the student’s level, how confident they feel, and what their goals are. This helps me see right away what we should focus on.
Depending on the student—whether it’s a child or an adult—I use different types of materials. For example, I might use a short reading, pictures, or simple activities to check how well they understand English. I pay close attention to their speaking so I can correct grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation in a natural way without interrupting the flow too much.
By the end of the first lesson, I usually have a clear picture of their strengths and what we should work on next. From there, I build a lesson plan that fits them personally, not just a standard template.
