Casual vs. Formal

课程介绍

Note: this lesson can be adjusted to be useful for both high-beginners or intermediate students.

- The lesson will start with a brief discussion about writing emails. The student will be asked about their past experiences with writing an email, how writing an email is the same or different in their native language, and how writing an email to a friend is different from writing an email to a stranger.

- Next, the student will be shown a few example emails; some will be casual and some will be formal. We will discuss the differences between the emails and what kind of language is used in each one (i.e. formal vs. casual).

- We will then go over the different parts of a basic email: opening, body, and closing. We will also discuss when it is appropriate to use casual language and when it is better to use more formal language.

- The student will be asked to write two short emails based on different scenarios. One will be casual and the other will be formal. Afterward, the teacher and the student will discuss the effectiveness of each email written by the student. If needed, the student student will be encouraged to make revisions.

- The lesson will end with a short re-cap and the student will have an opportunity to ask any remaining questions.
