Study, work and daily life in the US — from someone who did it for a decade.

Descrizioni

Moving abroad is not a longer holiday. The language is the easy part.

The hard parts are the ones nobody warns you about: how small talk works and why silence feels wrong there, what "let's get coffee sometime" actually means, how friendships form when you're the new person, how to open a bank account, why the first three months feel worse than you expected and why that's completely normal.

What we work on

Real American English. The register people actually use — with classmates, with a landlord, with a manager, at a party. Textbook English marks you as a visitor. This doesn't.

The social operating system. Making friends as an adult in a new country. Reading indirect refusals. Knowing when an invitation is real. Handling the moment someone says something you don't understand and everyone laughs.

The practical machinery. Housing, banking, healthcare, university admin, workplace norms. Unglamorous and absolutely the thing that overwhelms people in week two.

Culture shock, honestly. It has stages and it ends. Knowing the map makes the journey enormously easier.

Who this is for

  • Students going on exchange or to a full degree abroad
  • Professionals relocating or being transferred
  • Anyone who has already moved and is finding it harder than expected
  • People still deciding whether to go

Why me

I spent nearly ten years in the United States — middle school, high school and an Associate degree — so I didn't visit that culture, I grew up inside it. I've also lived in the UK, the Netherlands and Brazil, which means I've done the arrival four separate times. And I studied for a semester at the University of Tsukuba, so I've made the journey in the other direction too and I understand where the friction is for Japanese students specifically.

I'll tell you the honest version, including the parts that are hard. That's more useful than encouragement.
