We usually learn a language from listening, so if you know how to read in Pinyin, it will help you learn fast. But Chinese is more complicated, when different words combine together may change the tone, and same words combine with different word may change the tone, too. And the tone in Chinese is very important, because there are so many same tone different words and different words but same tone, so if you know the rule will help you more when you learn Chinese.
