STUDY STEPS IN MORE DETAIL

Before the lesson:
  • You listen to the dialogue in the ESL Language Lab website several times until you are able to understand every word.
  • You do the short exercises and short quiz in the ESL Language Lab website.
During the lesson:
  • You read through the transcript out loud with your tutor. Your tutor will check your speed, intonation and pronunciation.
  • Your tutor will explain new vocabulary and expressions.
  • You think about, make and practice similar 'real life' dialogues with your tutor.

Here is an example of one of the above conversations.  We will use this if you choose to sign up for a trial lesson.

Man:   "Hi! What was your name again?  I can't keep straight all the
           students names, this being the second day of school."
Girl:    "It's okay.  I have a hard time remembering names myself."
Man:    "Ah...Karen...right?"
Girl:    "No, it's Nancy! My mom's name is Karen."
Man:   "Nancy, okay.  I think I heard you are from England."
Girl:    "Well, I was born there, but my parents are American.
            I grew up in France."
Man:   "Oh! A world traveler!"
Girl:    "But then we moved here when I was nine."
Man:   "So, what does your father do now?"
Girl:    "Well, he's a college professor and he's in Scotland at the moment."
Man:   "How interesting!  What does he teach?"
Girl:    "Oh! I haven't a clue! Nah, just joking! He teaches chemistry."
Man:   "Oh, chemistry. And, ah... what about your mother?"
Girl:    "She works full-time at home."
Man:   "Oh, and what, does she...have her own business or something?"
Girl:    "Nah, she takes care of me."
Man:   "Being a homemaker can be a real hard but rewarding job."
Girl:    "I think so too."
