Greetings and Farewells (Salutations et Adieux)
This is the first and most important step to start speaking.
- Bonjour (Good day / Good morning) – Can be used all day long.
- Bonsoir (Good evening) – From late afternoon onwards.
- Salut (Hi / Bye) – Informal, for friends and family.
- Au revoir (Goodbye)
- À bientôt (See you soon)
- Bonne journée (Have a good day)
- Bonne soirée (Have a good evening)
Example Dialogue:
- Person A: "Bonjour!"
- Person B: "Bonjour! Comment ça va?" (Hello! How are you?)
- Person A: "Ça va bien, merci! Et vous?" (I'm fine, thank you! And you? - formal)
- Person B: "Ça va. Au revoir!" (I'm fine. Goodbye!)
- Person A: "À bientôt!" (See you soon!)
Basic Vocabulary (Vocabulaire de base)
- Yes / No: Oui / Non
- Please: S'il vous plaît (formal) / S'il te plaît (informal)
- Thank you: Merci
- Excuse me / Sorry: Pardon / Excusez-moi
- I don't understand: Je ne comprends pas.
- Repeat, please: Répétez, s'il vous plaît.
- Slowly, please: Lentement, s'il vous plaît.
- It is...: C'est...
- Big / Small: Grand / Petite (note gender agreement for adjectives later on!)
- Good / Bad: Bon / Mauvais
- Hot / Cold: Chaud / Froid
