Vocabulary: Family Members

Immediate Family

  • Le père = Father
  • La mère = Mother
  • Les parents = Parents
  • Le fils = Son
  • La fille = Daughter
  • Le frère = Brother
  • La sœur = Sister

Extended Family

  • Le grand-père = Grandfather
  • La grand-mère = Grandmother
  • L'oncle = Uncle
  • La tante = Aunt
  • Le cousin = Cousin (male)
  • La cousine = Cousin (female)

Grammar Focus 1: Possessive Adjectives

My, Your, His, Her

Physical Appearance

  • Grand(e) = Tall
  • Petit(e) = Short
  • Jeune = Young
  • Vieux / Vieille = Old

Personality

  • Gentil/Gentille = Kind
  • Sympathique = Nice
  • Intelligent(e) = Intelligent

Asking Age

Quel âge as-tu ?

  • How old are you?

Quel âge avez-vous ?

  • How old are you? (formal)

Answering

J'ai vingt ans.

  • I am twenty years old.

Elle a quinze ans.

  • She is fifteen years old.

Important Verb: Avoir (to have)

Pronunciation Notes

  • frère → frer
  • sœur → seur
  • gentil → zhan-tee
  • grand → grahn
  • vingt → van

Remember: many final consonants are silent.
