Christmas in South Africa
Christmas in South Africa is celebrated in different ways. We have several cultures, traditions, and religions, +11 languages:

During the Christmas holidays, businesses close. Many South Africans then travel to the sea during the Christmas celebrations.

One of the dominant or main language and cultural groups are the Xhosas, which is a black African ethnic group. Traditional Xhosa families travel to their ancestral lands for the festive period and slaughter a cow or a sheep to their ancestors. African bead work is hung on Christmas trees. Families will celebrate by having a feast including umngqusho, which is a dish made with samp and sugar beans. [Umngqusho is like rice or like a grain]. It's served with chicken, or umlequa (hard body chicken).

Traditional Xhosas follow African Traditional Religion, which can be described as Christianity and African tradition, mixed. This means that members believe in Christ as the Messiah, but also believe in the power of their ancestors.

Christmas was not a traditional part of the Zulu culture [another main language and cultural group], but now is celebrated by most. Even the Zulus that have not converted to Christianity often recognize Christmas out of fun.

Some South Africans do a braai which is like a barbeque, on Christmas Day. People braai or roast meat over the fire, or on a Weber, a barbeque oven. With the roasted meet, you usually have baked bread or pap (i.e. maize meal) and salads. Braais have their origins from Afrikaans speaking South Africans. The Afrikaans culture traces its heritage to Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Malaysia. Sometimes South Africans have their Christmas dinner on Christmas eve, because Christmas day can be very hot. Gifts are shared on Christmas eve.

Christians begin preparing for Christmas through observing Advent. Advent begins four weeks before Christmas. At each week’s Sunday church service, up until Christmas day, a candle is lit, symbolising love, hope, peace, and joy. Concerts, in which children usually act, are about the baby Jesus, and the wise men that came from the East. Small gifts are shared to celebrate the gift of Jesus.

Then we have what we call a Commercial Christmas: Shops and businesses make lots of money because people spend a lot of money. Christmas is celebrated with Santa Claus and his reindeer. Shops and streets are lit with bright, colourful lights. Large Christmas trees are bought and decorated. People buy gifts and share gifts on Christmas Day. Children also have Christmas plays at school. Children go up to Father Christmas, get a gift from him and some sit on his lap. People prepare turkey, chicken, and other meats. Included are different vegetables like beans, carrots, squash, and potatoes.  Then people eat traditional Christmas pudding, and eat Christmas mince pies, which are a British tradition. Children’s stockings are filled with little gifts, and bigger gifts are put under a brightly lit Christmas tree. Children usually get large, sometimes expensive gifts.

Production: (20 mins)
Students ask each other 5 questions about how they celebrate Christmas.
