The History of Valentine's Day

We will begin the lesson by discussing what the student knows about Valentine's Day. Do they know how the holiday started or who Saint Valentine is?
Next, we will go over some useful vocabulary for understanding the short article that we will be reading. The student will rate their understanding of each word, and we will only go over the words that the student does not know already.
We will then take turns reading and article about Saint Valentine and the history of Saint Valentine's Day. Afterward, the student will answer some general comprehension questions and we will have a discussion about what they learned from the article.
If there is enough time, we may also watch a short video clip about the history of the holiday and compare it to the article. Was there any new information in the video that wasn't covered in the article? Which was more interesting?
The lesson will end with a brief re-cap of what we learned about the holiday and the student will be given an opportunity to ask any last-minute questions.
