Using Terms That Relate To Hotels

Engage: The student and I will discuss our favorite hotels or hotels we have

used in the past. We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using a

hotel. This lesson will be for any student who is in the Pre-Intermediate Level.

 

Activate: Next, we will discuss phrases and words used in hotels.

The student and I will discuss what it means to check in and to check out of a hotel. In

addition, we will discuss room service and housekeeping. I will explain using simple terminology if the student is not exposed to these words and phrases. Room service makes requests and sends orders to a customer’s room. Housekeeping is used to clean and provide new toiletries to a customer’s room.

 

Activate: Role Playing involving hotels will be an activity for students to participate

in. I will explain the activity and assign students to work in pairs. I will give the student phrases and words to use in the activity. I will be the receptionist behind

the counter, and the student will be the customer checking into the hotel. We 

will practice for five minutes, and then they will switch roles for five minutes.

I will be sure to give each other feedback after all groups have presented.

 

Engage: I will then introduce Anagrams to the student. Paper and pencils will be needed for this activity. After giving a quick demonstration, I will have the student rearrange the letters of a word or a phrase to create new words. These words and phrases that will be available for the student to scramble will relate to hotels. For example, the word hotel will be scrambled to make lothe. A simple definition will be given to the student, and I will provide assistance when the student asks. I will make sure to allow students to write down the words. 

 

Study: A game of hangman will be played in this stage. Paper and pencils will be used in this activity as well. Words and phrases such as room service, check-in, check-out, housekeeping, and reservation must be guessed by students. I will begin the activity by choosing the word hotel, with five gaps to fill. These gaps will be for letters. The student must guess the letter that goes into the gap. If he or she gets the letter incorrect, I will write down the incorrect letter.

chooses is correct, I will write down the letter where it is supposed to go until the student realizes the correct word or phrase. 

 

Activate: The student advertises his or her own hotel using the vocabulary items relating to hotels. I will show my hotel advertisement to the student before the activity begins to demonstrate how the assignment should be completed. The student can create a miniature poster showing his or her hotel. They can be as creative as they would like. Color pencils and markers are optional. After 15 minutes of creating the advert, the student will advertise their hotel by convincing me to use his or her hotel. I will give praise and provide feedback to the student.
