Based on the title of the book (and there's a movie, you'd be forgiven for thinking that a crawdad is a type of bird—but crawdad is another word for crayfish, a type of freshwater crustacean that looks like a miniaturized lobster.
Throughout the novel, Kya struggles to make human connections while surviving in isolation in nature. Abandoned by her family from an early age, Kya learns to find comfort and sustenance from the land and water in the marsh, making a home for herself in stark circumstances.

Kya's coming-of-age
- Kya grows up isolated in the marshes of North Carolina
- She only attends school for one day after being bullied
- She teaches herself how to cook and shop
- She develops a close relationship with Tate Walker, her first love and friend
The murder investigation
- Chase Andrews, a local celebrity, is found dead in the marsh
- Sheriff Ed Jackson becomes convinced that Chase was murdered
- Kya is arrested and jailed without bail for two months
- Kya is found not guilty at her trial
The book explores what people can get from nature and what they need from one another. It also explores the conflict between these two ideas.
